Drywall patching and repair options

Holes and dents

Damage from door handles, furniture, anchors, or a removed TV bracket. The repair depends on the opening's size and the condition of the surrounding drywall.

Cracks and damaged seams

Cracked joints, peeling tape, or an earlier patch that stands out. Mention whether the damage is new, growing, or returning after a previous repair.

Wall and ceiling patches

Areas opened for access or damaged during other work. Include the location, approximate dimensions, ceiling height, and any remaining work behind the opening.

If you are relocating a screen, include TV mounting and repair of the old mounting holes in the same request. For a rental turnover, list the rooms and repairs together so the full scope is clear.

How much does drywall repair cost?

Drywall repair is estimated by the work required. A few anchor holes need a different approach from a larger opening, ceiling repair, or patch that needs texture and paint. Request a free estimate for your project.

  • Size and number of repairs: approximate dimensions and how many areas need attention.
  • Condition: surface damage, damaged board, loose tape, or a previous repair.
  • Access: wall or ceiling location, height, furniture, and room access.
  • Finish: smooth or textured surface, primer, paint touch-up, or painting the full wall.

Tell us the finished result you want. Confirm whether the estimate includes patching, texture, priming, and painting so you know what will be complete at the end.

What goes into a finished repair?

  1. Assess the area. Identify the damaged material, existing finish, and any unresolved cause before deciding on the repair.
  2. Patch and finish. Depending on the damage, work may involve replacing a section of board, reinforcing the repair, applying joint compound, and smoothing the surface.
  3. Blend the surface. Texture, primer, and paint are separate parts of the finish and should be included in the agreed scope.

Allow time between finishing stages. The compound, coat thickness, temperature, and humidity affect drying; a repair may need more than one visit. USG's drywall repair guidance explains why successive coats and drying matter. Scheduling should account for the finish, not just filling the hole.

Texture matching and painting

Match the surrounding surface

A repair needs to blend with the wall's texture as well as its shape. Tell us whether your wall is smooth, orange peel, knockdown, or another finish. If you are unsure, describe what you see; the existing surface needs to be assessed before choosing a matching method.

The texture pattern, previous paint layers, and lighting all affect how noticeable a patch looks. An exact invisible match cannot be promised for every existing finish.

Choose touch-up or a full wall repaint

Painting can be included. Keep any leftover paint or its brand, color, and sheen information available. Even the same color may look different on a repaired area because of paint age, application, or surface texture.

Repainting from corner to corner may provide a more consistent appearance when a touch-up will stand out. Sherwin-Williams's touch-up guidance covers these matching limits. Include interior painting in your estimate request if you want the repair finished in color.

Drywall repair questions

Can water-damaged drywall be repaired?

The moisture source and material condition need to be assessed first. Tell us if a leak is active and whether the drywall is soft, stained, or has visible mold. Fixing the leak and addressing affected material comes before cosmetic finishing. The EPA advises resolving water problems and drying affected surfaces before painting; moldy surfaces should not simply be painted over.

What if a crack keeps coming back?

A recurring crack needs a closer look at its cause. Describe when it appeared, earlier repairs, and any change in size. Further assessment may be needed before a cosmetic repair is appropriate.

Will one small patch take only one visit?

Not necessarily. Drying, texture, primer, and paint can require separate stages even for a small area. Include any move-out, move-in, or painting deadline when requesting an estimate so the timing can be discussed.

How should I prepare the room?

Remove fragile items and wall decorations near the repair, and make room to reach the area. Mention large furniture or difficult ceiling access ahead of time. Discuss work-area protection and cleanup as part of planning the job.
